Connection/Disconnect Solutions

Connection problems usually have one or more of the following causes. It is a good idea to look into things in the following order:

1. Modem configuration
2. Modem driver not current (Software/WinModems)
3. Modem firmware needs upgrade
4. Modem requires an init string (extra settings)
5. Phone line to your home or business
6. Problems at our end

From the desktop:

• Click on My Computer
• Click on Control Panel
• Click on Modems
• Highlight the the modem you use
• Click on the Properties button
• Set the max speed 57600
• Click on Connection tab
• It should read (from top to bottom) 8, none, 1
• Verify the check in the box for Wait for dial tone before dialing
• Uncheck any other boxes that are checked
• Click on OK
• Click on OK or Close
• Close the Control Panel window
• Reopen the My Computer widow (if required)
• Click on Dial-Up Networking
• Right click on MIC&S dialer
• Toward the bottom of window, click on Configure... button
• Set the max speed 57600
• Click on Connection tab
• It should read (from top to bottom) 8, none, 1
• Check in the box for Wait for dial tone before dialing
• Uncheck any other boxes that are checked
• Click on OK
• Close the open windows and retry connection

Some modems require an init string to function better. These init strings change some of the preprogrammed characteristics that were set during manufacturer and often result in better performance.

Some modems run too "hot", that is they try to run too fast for the line conditions, and need to have their speed limited to where they operate error free, Running to fast will slow transmission throughput and cause disconnects due to error conditions on the line. Please talk with our tech support to determine the correct speed setting.
